THE GLOBAL CAPITALIST CRISIS AND THE WAY FORWARD FOR AFRICA

In this book Professor Nabudere explores the recent developments arising out of the global economic crisis, which is a reflection of the crisis of world capitalism and its impact on the lives of ordinary people such as the on-going high food prices. He argues that this crisis is a global one and that despite the earlier reaction in the African countries that the crisis will not affect Africa,  its effects on the African economies is already being felt adversely. Professor Nabudere argues that the efforts by the G 20 Summit to reform the Bretton Woods system will not work because they just reinforce the role of the IMF whose policies have head an adverse impact on the African economies. He proposes an alternative paradigm for the ordering of the global economy and governance based on local production.

In his view, the emergence of the “New Economy” based on financial manipulation where wealth is created without the production of real goods is unsustainable. He argues that it is this phenomenon that has led to the “toxic” wealth which has resulted in the present global capitalist crisis. To stem the crisis the production of real goods by real producers must be revived; local and regional markets should be strengthened; cooperative organisations resurrected and the existing post-colonial states deconstructed. The author introduces the idea of a ‘glocal’ society based on local nationalities and global citizenship as well as a glocal civil society embracing the ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ poor and driven by their interests instead of donor interests...[Abstract]
